News for STLE Caribbean Section

Previous Conference:
STLE's Caribbean Region Section hosted the 4th Annual Tribology Conference, Education Course, A Young Engineers Forum and the hosting of the OMA/CLS Examinations and the Vibration Institute Level 1 Analyst Examination. The Education Course will be presented by Mr. William D. Marscher of Mechanical Solutions Inc, and will be on Maintenance and Troubleshooting of GAS Compressors and GAS Turbines. The Education Course will take place at the Trinidad Hilton and Conference Center in Trinidad, during the period 21st - 23rd February 2005. The hosting of the OMA/CLS and The Vibration Institute Level 1 will take place on Thursday 24th February 2005. The Young Engineers Forum will take place on Thursday 24th February 2005. Ten engineering students from the University of the West Indies Faculty of Engineering will be making presentation. Participants to the Education Course will be given a package all inclusive of; Education Course Materials, Conference Bag, Polo Shirt, 1 Year Membership 2005/06, and Certificate with CEU Approved and Recognized by STLE and The University of the West Indies. Meetings:
In September 2004, the Section had a visitor from the Q Hi Group in England. Mr. Ross Kennedy was visiting Trinidad at the invitation from TOSL Engineering Limited. Mr. Vikash Rajnauth an employee of TOSL has accepted the request of STLE to have Mr. Kennedy present at a Technical Session to STLE members. Mr. Kennedy accepted and he spoke with the section members and made a presentation on Infrared Technology and Detectors. Thirteen members attended this session and Mr. Kennedy was presented with a Plaque followed by light refreshments. The section also had several meeting with the University of the West Indies, Faculty of Engineering.

Past Events:
The Caribbean Region Section has successfully hosted three Tribology conference and Education Courses. In attendance were the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, The Minister of Energy, STLE President Dr. Josiah Knight and our training hosts, Mr. Jack Poley and William D. Marscher. The Caribbean Region Section began with the vision of Mr. Kuarlal Rampersad and Mr. Michel Murphy. The Section began with 21 members in 2001, in 2002 membership has increased to 54, in 2003 the section reached 89 membership and in 2004 the section has a large number of 117 members. Our membership has increased more that 100% each year. STLE Caribbean Region Section has been awarded the Small section award for the past two consecutive years 2003/04. The section hosted several volunteer projects, whereby providing school books and accessories to several schools and communities. In early December 2004, the section donated books to the Rampanalgas RC School, in Toco, East Trinidad, The Tunapuna RC School, Tunapuna, and The TIA Primary School in Princes Town. On Thursday 16th Chairman Rampersad made a personal contribution to the Blind Welfare Association Christmas Celebration and Presented Garbage Bins to the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Center.

Other notes:
Effective 2003 a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) was signed between STLE Caribbean Region Section and The University of the West Indies Campus, Faculty of Engineering. All Education Courses will be in collaboration with the University and STLE. Participants will receive certificates from STLE and The University with CEU and the Dean Signature. In 2004/05 the Caribbean Region Section has pledged the sum of $20,000.00 Trinidad and Tobago Dollars for an engineering student to peruse an MPhl in Tribology and Lubrication Engineering at the University. This pledge will be on an annual basis. In 2005 the Caribbean Region Section has made great progress in forming alliances with Several Organizations to assist engineering students for On the Job Training (OJT). STLE will be sourcing employment for ten second year engineering student within organization during the summer vacation. This training will enhance and develop our young engineers in preparing them for on the job market and employment opportunity after completion of their degrees. STLE Caribbean Region Section will continue to promote the mission of STLE and would be the preferred society for training and education development for technicians and engineers within the Caribbean Region.
